Populating collection from file

Hallo,

          What is the System connection of type File System is used for ? Can I use the step "File System Read" to populate an Object Collection ? If yes , what should be the format of the input file related to the Object ? CSV/XML ? Is there an example / documentation available ? anybody have an example ? cheers and thanks
